On the Continuum Fallacy: Is Temperature a Continuous Function?

چکیده
Abstract It is often argued that the indispensability of continuum models comes from their empirical adequacy despite decoupling microscopic details modelled physical system. There thus a commonly held misconception temperature varying across region space or time can always be accurately represented as continuous function. We discuss three inter-related cases modelling — in phase transitions, thermal boundary resistance and slip flows show view fallacious on ground system are not necessarily decoupled models. how discontinuities present both data (experiments simulations) phenomena (theory models) discontinuum variation may have greater explanatory power. The conclusions our paper are: a) idealisations indispensable to discontinuous representations work depending context; b) continuously defined function best scientific world; c) its continuity, where applicable, contingent matter. also raise question whether should considered truly de-idealised descriptions phenomena.

Insertion of a gamma-continuous function
A necessary and sufficient condition in terms of lower cut sets are given for the insertion of a $gamma-$continuous function between two comparable real-valued functions.
متن کاملIs the Maximal Function of a Lipschitz Function Continuous?
We examine the action of the maximal operator on Lipschitz and Hölder functions in the context of homogeneous spaces. Boundedness results are proven for spaces satisfying an annular decay property and counterexamples are given for some other spaces. The annular decay property is defined and investigated.

chapter one is devoted to a moderate discussion on preliminaries, according to our requirements. chapter two which is based on our work in (24) is devoted introducting weighted semigroups (s, w), and studying some famous function spaces on them, especially the relations between go (s, w) and other function speces are invesigated. in fact this chapter is a complement to (32). one of the main fea...

Matrix functions are used in many areas of linear algebra and arise in numerical applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we introduce an effective approach for determining matrix function f(A)=g(q(A)) of a square matrix A, where q is a polynomial function from a degree of m and also function g can be a transcendental function. Computing a matrix function f(A) will be time- consu...
متن کاملQCD transition temperature: approaching the continuum on the lattice
In order to clarify the source of the discrepancy between our previous transition temperature determination [Phys. Lett. B 643, 46 (2006)] and that of the Bielefeld-Brookhaven-ColumbiaRiken collaboration we improved our calculations by taking even smaller lattice spacings (Nt=12 and Nt=16 at one point) and by using physical quark masses also for the T=0 quantities. In addition to the kaon decay...
